i've been to the doctors about swollen glands, and i got 2 sets of blood taken, im not sure which kinds, the results came up normal, but i was wondering if they could have detected cancer, because if not isn't there a chance i could have it?
My mom went for medical checkup and cancer tumor markers CA19.9 and CEA showed abnormally high readings. Subsequent colonoscopy confirmed she had colon cancer. The tumor had been surgically removed 7 days ago. Awaiting pathology report for next course of action.
Angela - raised levels in some blood tests results would indicate a problem... further tests would then be carried out to find out exactly what the problem was.. you would of being admitted in to hospital if the results showed up anything really sinister.
denise - yes, for example i have thyroid cancer and the tyroglobuline levels helped to diagnose it and also is helping to check how the treatment is working.

TIM - Blood cell count would be abnormal. Yes they would find enough to look further
ReplyDeleteSea Dog - Yes, blood tests can reveal cancer and many other things, like if you've had a heart attack, also Leukemia is a cancer in the blood.
ReplyDeleteballetdancer4life - Well yes, in fact it could detect high white blood cell count. I am not a doctor though, maybe follow up with more tests?
ReplyDeleteRob Nelson - Yes it its possible to detect cancer in a blood test though if it was not seen in your results then you probably don't have it.

ReplyDeleteMeg - The doctor would have requested blood tests for specific reasons which would not necessarily show up cancer. I doubt he was looking for cancer.
