    The echocardiogram can give accurate information about the pumping action of the heart, and about the structure of the heart and the valves. It will indicate if the patient recently had a heart attack or if heart failure is present. It is also used routinely to assess people with heart valve problems or congenital heart disease. Other types of echocardiograms include:- A stress echocardiogram. This can help to diagnose coronary heart disease, heart failure and cardiomyopathy. A Transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE), which is used when doctors need a closer and more defined image of the heart valves. Detailed pictures of the heart are taken from the oesophagus (gullet), which lies behind the heart. Foetal echocardiograms are used to help diagnose certain heart defects before a child is born. A foetal echocardiogram shows the baby's heart in more detail than a normal ultrasound scan used in pregnancy.

    ALL ANSWERS SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED, IN ANY FORUM AND ESPECIALLY IN THIS ONE. - MANY ANSWERS ARE FLAWED.

    It is extremely important to obtain an accurate diagnosis before trying to find a cure. Many diseases and conditions share common symptoms.

    The information provided here should not be used during any medical emergency or for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition. A licensed physician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment of any and all medical conditions.

    Hope this helps

  3. gangadharan nair - This test is done to evaluate the valves and chambers of the heart in a noninvasive way. The echocardiogram allows doctors to diagnose, evaluate, and monitor:
    * Abnormal heart valves
    * Atrial fibrillation
    * Congenital heart disease
    * Damage to the heart muscle in patients who have had heart attacks
    * Heart murmurs
    * Infection in the sac around the heart (pericarditis)
    * Infection on or around the heart valves (infectious endocarditis)
    * Pulmonary hypertension
    * The pumping function of the heart for people with heart failure
    * The source of a blood clot after a stroke or TIA
    The biggest advantage to echocardiography is that it is noninvasive (doesn't involve breaking the skin or entering body cavities) and has no known risks or side effects.
