I am 19 years old. I am not overweight, but I am physically inactive. I have not done any physical activity in probably 5 years. Would I eventually get diabetes if I don't already have it now?
Lauren - Physical inactivity cold contribute to developing diabetes. However, diabetes is mostly dependent on what you eat. You should try to avoid sugary and excessively fatty foods. If you're truly concerned, I would recommend that you consult a doctor or at the least look diabetes up on webmd.
TheOrange Evil - The greatest risk factors for diabetes are age and genes. Inactivity does not cause diabetes, nor does weight. There's a strong correlation between obesity and Type 2 diabetes, but most overweight and obese people will never become diabetic. Also, there's probably a connection with being sedentary and diabetes simply because people who are overweight have a harder time being physically active.
syl c. - Being overweight is a risk factor, but other risk factors such as family history, genetics, ethnicity and age, lifestyle factors also play a role. Unfortunately, too many people disregard the other risk factors for diabetes and think that weight is the only risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Most overweight people never develop type 2 diabetes and never exercise. Many people with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or only moderately overweight and most do exercise.
If you are worried about it check with your doctor and obtain a simple blood glucose test for a definitive diagnosis. There are other medical problems that do arise from sedentary lifestyle including high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, bone density problems such as osteoporosis, etc. Try walking 30 min 3 X a day this helps and will start you on the road to exercising probably something you have missed all those years.
