My Grilfriends Mom Has Cirrhosis Of Liver, What Do We Do?

396545116 The mom has cirrhosis of liver, and she said today she started bleeding from her vagina. She is an 56 yr old woman and has had it for a while. They live in welfare and they can hardly afford a thing. My gfs dad had the same thing and he died soon after he started bleeding. How much time does her mom have and what exactly can we do to help her mom?

  1. Boomn4x4 - Get her a bottle of good scotch. If's she's going to buy the farm, she might as well do it drunk.

  2. MadCatter - Hard to tell. Take her to hospital bleeding is abnormal from any hole if it's not menstruation

  3. Baa Baa - Since she has this disease, her doctor should have talked to her about what options she has for getting better. You don't say what has caused her disease in the first place since there are quite a number of reasons for having cirrhosis which occurs when scar tissue replaces healthy tissue in the liver. It takes many many years for scar tissue to form, sometimes decades. Does she abuse alcohol? Does she have viral hepatitis such as hep A, B, C, and D? Is there some other condition that caused it?

There is no cure for cirrhosis other than getting a liver transplant. With her being so poor, it could actually help her out medically since she probably qualifies for Medicaid. Vaginal bleeding is not a symptom as far as I know due to having cirrhosis. It can cause other internal bleeding, but I never see vaginal bleeding as being a symptom. She could be having a separate medical problem with that type of bleeding and should see a gynecologist. Medicaid does pay for liver transplants since I have known a number of people with Medicaid that received liver transplants. If she has cirrhosis due to alcohol abuse, it is going to be tough on her for getting a transplant since there are extra requirements. The first requirement is that she go through a 6 month detox and get counseling or rehab for the alcoholism. They will also require her to submit to random drug/alcohol testing anytime they feel like asking her for one. I won't go into all the details since alcoholism might not even be her problem, but wanted to mention it just in case.

Anyone with cirrhosis should get routinely checked for varices. Unwanted veins form with cirrhosis that are weak, can leak and even burst causing a crisis of internal bleeding. There is a simple procedure called "banding" that can be done that will greatly lower the risk of internal bleeding. It gets rid of these varices. It is done through an endoscopy. I had cirrhosis and had mine banded routinely. I never had any internal bleeding.

How much time does her mom have? it all depends on how much liver damage she has right now and how close to total liver failure she is at. If she is not sick and not having many symptoms, she could live for years yet with proper medical care. A lot depends on why she has it too. If she drinks and stops drinking, there might be a big improvement in her condition. You would need to give a lot more details about her health in order to even give a ballpark estimate. If she is close to total failure, I would want to ask why no one has talked to her about getting a transplant to save her life. She is a young woman yet and if cirrhosis is her only problem, the odds are very good that she could get better. If she drinks and won't quit and this is the reason for her cirrhosis, then there is no chance of getting better. She would be denied a transplant.

What can you do? Try to get her the help she needs in order to get better.

  4. Darren - There's some good advice here. \\but really there's nothing can be done about cirohisis. Got it myself, diagnised when i was 25 and still here at 39 and consider myself fitter and harder than the average. I understand your worry but I live in a different place where transplants and medical care is distributed equally. but I'd say bleeding isn't probably that uncommon because of the plateletes or something.had it myself (from gums and nose) and still getting by. All the best brother, hope you all go on for at least a decade. XXX
