i have to get a filling and i hate the novocaine needle any advice on how i can take my mind off the huge dang thing going in my gums ? thank you in advance
Alice - Let your dentist know that you're scared; tell them you're not keen on the needle, they'll try to make the procedure as comfortable and easy for you as possible. Most dentists have an anesthetic spray they use to numb the gums before the needle goes in, if you feel that you may faint or become traumatized in any way from the needle, ask if they will spray the gum first. Other than that, breathe deep and RELAX, it makes everything alot easier.
If you're in any pain, be sure to let the dentist know.
blondestar2727 - Take nice long deep breaths and think about the thing that makes you happiest! Dont worry about the needle. Its just like a bee sting and the pain is only for a couple seconds. Then your numb before you know it!
CDA1 - Yeah, it is not a big deal, but I completely understand your fear. They will use a topical GEL that they let sit in the area that will be injected. Usually they let it sit a few minutes. Let them know your fears and that you want them to leave the topical there for longer than they usually do. They should honor your request. After that, the stick of the needle (super super small, the needles are) should be minimal discomfort. Often times the pain that patients feel with injections is if the dentist puts the anesthetic in too fast. People feel that the dentist take forever when he is injecting, you want that, so be patient. Putting the anesthetic in too fast expands the tissue too quickly and causes pain. The slower he does it, the better for you. Take your headphones and listen to some music so you can relax a bit better. I am sure you will be fine.
