  1. Sunflower - Number one - you need daily exercise.

Number two - you really have to watch your carbs just as you would if you had diabetes. Do research on the internet.

Potatoes, rice and stuff with flour is nearly as bad and sometimes worse than sugared foods. I no longer have mashed potatoes, although I can have baked potatoes without a problem.

Get yourself a blood sugar meter. Test yourself after meals to gauge what you can and cannot eat.

  2. Tralee A - you'll probly get this from alot of people but excersize is a good place to start as well as diet
Food that is labeled "light" or "lite" may not always be low fat. Can be light in colour or other things like that.
A book that is really handy is called "Calorie Fat and carbohydrate counter" by the "calorie King" you can get them from most book stores and even online.
It takes alot of guess work out of adding things up as well as it has handy tips in it

  3. TheOrange Evil - Sunflower has great advice.

Exercise improves your insulin sensitivity and low-carbohydrate foods don't require your pancreas to make as much insulin as high-carbohydrate foods, like sugar, rice, grains, potatoes, and corn.

I just want to make one point, though, and I hope I am not scaring you. Pre-diabetes almost always advances to Type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes is just Type 2 diabetes caught very early. You're already at a point where your pancreas is impaired - that's why your blood sugar is elevated. Many people think of pre-diabetes as the first step on the path to diabetes, but pre-diabetes is an indication that some permanent damage has already been done. That doesn't mean that all hope is lost! You can still slow down the progress of the disease, avoid complications, and stay off medication/insulin for longer with early intervention.

  4. Tabea - First of all there is no such thing as pre-diabetes. That's like saying partially pregnant.

What it means is that you already have Type 2 diabetes, but you are lucky that it has been caught early. Your pancreas is still producing insulin; the only problem is that your body is not using it properly. If you are able to change your diet and lifestyle so that your body can respond more effectively to insulin, you will avoid stressing out your pancreas and killing off the insulin-producing beta cells in your pancreas.

Diabetes is primarily a disease of carbohydrate intolerance. Someone in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes (or pre-diabetes if you prefer to think of it that way) has difficulty metabolizing carbohydrate due to insulin resistance. The most effective approach is hence to limit carbohydrate, thus limiting spikes in blood sugar level. Keeping blood sugar levels normal is the single most important goal for all people with diabetes.

Best thing you can do for yourself is to buy a blood glucose meter and start testing your blood sugar 2 hours after eating. It should be under 140 mg/dl or 7.8mm/ol. If it is above this target, then the meal you ate was too high in carbs. Reduce the carbs and try again. You will then find out how many carbs you can tolerate per meal.

Finally your doctor was doing you a disservice by giving you wrong information about getting rid of diabetes. You can't get rid of diabetes. If your body can't metabolize carbs, it can't metabolize carbs. It's like trying to cure a nut allergy sufferer.

  5. buffalo - You cannot get rid of diabetes but you can control it.

Here is what is needed for life. You may ommit the metformin if you have good numbers with diet and exercise.

There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :
    1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.
    2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph… This is a great site for info
    3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells. Also never ever take Onglyza or Januvia . They can can inhibit the bodys immune system and let cancer spread.
    4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

Take care Good luck and watch out for DEPRESSION>
