How Long Will I Keep My Muscle Mass For?

396545382 I worked out a lot over the past year, took a couple months off about 4 months ago, and pretty much had to start from scratch. I started going again and I was going every day for the past 2 months(training different muscles every day.)
Anyway I'm moving and I'll be away from the gym for probably around 2 weeks and I've gone up a lot of weight in pretty much everything.
I'll be doing push ups daily but that's it, so I'm not as worried about my chest as much as say my biceps, back, traps, shoulders, etc..
So my question is, Will I drop in weight when I get back to the gym in 2 weeks?
If so, about how much? Starting over SUCKS.

  1. Rachel - The more muscle you have, the more you need to work on it to keep it built up. You'll lose some in 2 weeks, but don't freak out--you won't lose it all. It usually takes about 6 mos to lose any significant amount of muscle mass. Just keep a steady schedule when you get back to the gym. You'll have to do a little bit of catchup but don't worry a lot.

  2. Ryan - How long muscle mass stays on your body depends on many factors. Some are:

Your protein intake, your metabolic rate, activity relating to strength training, genetics, as well as how far your added weight gain is from your body's metabolic equilibrium.

My advice is to eat protein as well as carbs, so your body does not begin to digest muscle for the amino acids. Good luck pal, I know it's tough. I'm 6 ' 1'' and 165 lbs. I know what its like to have a metabolism through the roof. I eat 3500 calories and can't gain a pound.

  3. A Soul De Cynics - Ryan is mostly correct. Once you work out for an extended period of time (Different for everyone), neuromuscular adaption will take place. What that means is the nerve connections between your brain and muscle become stronger. What that means is even if you do lose some muscle while not being able to train, once you proceed to train again, you will build the muscle you lost back at an accelerated rate. You should not lose much muscle at all in 2 weeks. It most likely will not be even noticeable. Keep your diet and protein intake as it is. You may notice as you probably did before that you won't be able to lift quite as much weight when you start lifting again. Don't let it bother you. You'll regain the lost strength fast. :)
