How Can I Get Used To My Retainers?

396545381 So I just got my braces off about a week ago. I'm very happy. However, I got my retainers this morning and my orthodontist said I have to wear them 24/7 for the next 4 months. And then just at night time for awhile. I didn't think it was going to be this bad but it is. I think having braces is actually more fun than this. Well I can barely talk and I'm so embarrassed by it. Also, my mouth just isn't used to it. I know you get used to it but it seems like I never will. They are just SO uncomfortable and they make me gag sometimes. And they kinda hurt. Is there a way I could get used to them faster? They are really bothering me. All of the saliva is gathering in the top retainer so every 30 seconds I have to slurp it out and swallow it and I know that's really gross but if I dont slurp my spit will end up drooling out of my mouth when I talk. So is there a way I could prevent or help any of this? Oh...and also, I'm so afraid to wear them tonight when I go to bed because I'm afraid I'll choke on them and never wake up. Any suggestions? Thanks. (:

  1. s - Same happened to me I got. My retainers yesterday and I could barely pronounce words. I was in class and I had to quiz someone and read the definition of a word and they had to guess the word and they couldn't understand what I had said until the third time I repeated it. I can barely pronouce the t h's in words and the f's. It's really annoying.
So anyways my orthodontist gave me a paper and it said that it usually takes you 1-2 days to get used to talking when you have them on.
Also you won't choke at night so don't worry anyways I don't think your orthodontist would tell you to wear them while sleeping if you were really going to choke.
I'm guessing you have the wired retainers right? Yea I have had those before and I never choked on them. Before I got braces I had to wear those and I know how you feel about the saliva thing. But now I have clear retainers and I don't have that problem anymore. So anyways don't worry. Youll get used to them in no time.

  2. Wendy - I have retainers and its been since may that i got them...You get used to them after like a week or so. The saliva will calm down and eventually iit doesn't do that anymore. Actually, I was like crying becasuse they made me sound so weird, but that also stops after like a week. just practice talking. some people have a worse lisp than others but it definantly becomes less noticeable. It won't hurt in a week either. it will loosen up. Actually, you forget you're wearing them, and it starts to feel kind of weird without them...And they won't fall off when u sleep, haha (:
