Im 18, Ive had an aortic root replacment 5 months ago for marfans syndrome as my aortic root was dilated to 5.8cm, the rest of my aorta was a normal diamiter, in the last two months ive bern cycling alot on my racing bike, 35-45 mile a day (the doctor tells me it is fine to be cycling im just not sure at the intensity and time i do) , im on tablets to keep my blood pressure low and i was wondering if, moderate-high intensity exercise for 1-2 hours will increase my blood pressure to dangerous levels, enough to dilate the rest of my aorta and whether i will need more surgery
Smoky'dad - Adam Its Great to hear the great progress you've made in your recovery, 5 month out I'd personally be a little concerned at just how intense your program is and I should think that Once your healed "well" from the surgery then as long as you keep an idea of your BP and "normality" where its at "now".. I never had a valve replaced, But would suggest 2 things for you to check out on line and you may find others who've had similar surgeries to yours .. I had an aortic dissection, so I know what you DON't want to be when you get older, but ON Facebook, there are a few open heart surgery survivor and zipper clubs, I know that in "Open heart surgery the zipper club" there are a few other kids your age who've had similar issues and also for all things AORTIC (including valves) check out www.aorticdissection.com Obviously it involves dissections BUT also has GREAT information on your issues as well..from Marfans to various types of Valves used and pros and cons to them mechanicals are supposed to last forever, but make noise, bovine and natural valves may need replacement in your lifetime = more surgery... and you'll want to explore all about your entire Aorta from the root into the ascending and arch into the descending, abdominal to the illiac splits and "femorals" and below the "popilteal arteries" (knees) ..... your time cycling should be fine and intensity wise I'd expect if your valve was messing up you would know because you would have trouble breathing and such.... just curious what country your from ? and HOPE to see you pop into the zipper club Lots of good information there
