Are Slow Heart Rates Dangerous?

396545385 Ive not thought a lot about the way my heart beats until recently. My boyfriend was laying with his head on my chest and made a comment about how slow my heart beats are. Like i said i never really thought a lot about it. However, i decided to time it and see how many times it beats a minute when i am at rest. To my surprise, its only beating 40-42 times a minute. Ive timed it a few times. I know typically the at rest the heart is between 60-100. I do have an anxiety disorder and i had a heart murmur when i was younger. Im not sure if either of those factors tie into it, but im wondering if there is any reason for me to be concerned? i read that typically athletes have low heart rates and its suppose to be a sign of good health. I do exercise regularly,(4 times a week) but im also slightly over weight. ( So far ive lost 52 lbs since February of this year. )

Any advice?

  1. Vice Versa - Hmm this is a tricky one. I think it depends on body size? Not sure, but look what i found: http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/tc/bradycardia-slow-heart-rate-overview

To be accurate, you should just see your doc. *Good Luck!*

  2. Sheila P - As you mentioned athletes do usually have slower heart rates and the 40's can be normal for them. Normal is 60-100. Are you on a beta blocker? They make your heart rate lower.
40's is low. You need to see your Dr and have them put a holter monitor on. You wear it for 24 hours and it tells them how low your heart rate acutally goes. If it is in the 40's while you are awake it could be lower while sleeping.
Do you have any symptoms? fatigue is a big indicator for bradycardia. If it gets to low and you are symptomatic they might have to consider a pacemaker.
    Good luck!
