When I can, I drink about a 750ml bottle of liquor a day. I often, upon waking up, and at random times during the day, feel like Im having a fairly large anxiety attack. Im scarred for no reason, I have the shakes, my heart beats fast, and I think Im going to die. I dont get alcohol withdrawals, as far as I know. I did some research, and I think my alcohol consumption is making me hypoglycemic. Does this make sense? And how, other than not drinking, do I avoid getting these ill affects until I get into rehab?

ReplyDeleteTelescope - Alcohol actually raises the blood sugar to very high numbers and makes you HYPERglycemic. I also suffered from drinking too much for years. I think that's what gave me the diabetes in the first place. I was able to stop it all in a few days. At some point, you just get tired of it or you just get too old to keep on drinking the booze. I was mostly a beer drinker, but never liked the taste of it anyhow. I was using it to try to escape the pain of life, then using it to try to kill myself. Like I said, I just stopped one day and have not gone back to it.
ReplyDeletesyl c. - Yes it does make sense. The liver is mainly responsible for breaking down the liquor in the body, so when a person ends up drinking a lot, the liver occupies itself with the alcohol and is unable to produce the necessary sugar required by the body. With a lack of sugar the obvious happens, hypoglycemia.
ReplyDeleteLuckily for you hypoglycemia does not happen every time you drink. The time when it really happens is when a person ends up drinking too much on an empty stomach. So the ideal thing would be eat a light snack or a small meal before going out to drink. Also if you are suffering from any problems of sugar problems, then it would be wise to check your glucose levels before you can start drinking.
Following a good exercise plan also helps in overcoming and delaying the onset of this condition. Make sure your diet includes fibers, carbohydrates and starch in good quantities. Avoid sugary foods as much as you can.
The most common symptoms are-excessive sweating, anxiety, fatigue, tiredness and speech problems. You are experiencing anxiety lots of it, paranoia, shaking, palpitations. Look out for these and consult a doctor immediately when they occur.
If you have diabetes and also plan to drink heavily. You may be in a bit of trouble in this situation. Make sure you consult your doctor before drinking and seeking rehab is a good idea esp. with all the severe symptoms you are experiencing from alcohol consumption. Also look out for a good dietitian who can provide you with a good diet plan to over come the effects of hypoglycemia.
Hope this helps.
