Wisdom Teeth Out On Thursday... Still Bleeding?

396545381 So I had a terrible time after I woke up from my surgery. My jaw ached and I was gagging on the gauze and I threw up in the recovery room. I started to bleed a lot so one of the doctors gave me new gauze and had to hold my jaw together to stop me from bleeding so much. I threw up again in the car and a couple times at home because I was so sick, and proceeded to start bleeding again. I'm scared that I wasn't able to properly 'clot' and therefore have continued to bleed after almost 40 hours post op? It's not very much and it's only the lower right socket that continues to bleed, but it's annoying. Is this normal? I only notice it when I wash out my mouth. I try not to spit but sometimes I have no choice and I end up spitting blood. I have been biting down on damp teabags, should I continue? It seems to be getting better, but I'm just paranoid about complications.

It sounds pretty clear to me that you are not following the post-operative instructions at all.

You mentioned the words “wash out my mouth” and “spitting blood”, two actions that are absolute no-no’s when you have a socket that hasn’t stopped bleeding.

If you had been following the instructions, i.e. biting down on gauze for one hour, nonstop, without opening your mouth to look at the gauze, you would not have been spitting up blood. But the fact that you’re spitting up blood suggests that you are frequently and repeatedly removing the gauze (or teabags) and looking for bleeding. Every time you do that, you allow the bleeding to resume and you are back at square-one.

The gauze is supposed to be soaked with blood. The purpose of the gauze isn’t to collect all the blood from the socket. The purpose of the gauze is to apply pressure to the extraction site, as it is pressure that will stop the socket from bleeding. Whatever blood you get in your mouth - which is actually a very small amount - is supposed to be swallowed. A small amount won’t upset your stomach.

Anyway, you should go back to the surgeon and have them evaluate the bleeding. They may conceivably use some socket packing materials like Gel-foam or gauze soaked with a clotting medication called Amicar. But most likely, they will simply sit you down in a room, put some gauze in your mouth, and have you bite down for an hour. Basically, they’ll make you do in front of them what you should have been doing at home!

  3. All Dental Options - Hi
You will not bleed to death, it is a big deal what you went through , just bite down hard on a clean cloth for 10 mins, that will clot, , just rest. take care .

  4. Jessica De vinci - Bleeding 3days after extraction is normal. in case of surgical extraction, due to bone cutting a person may bleed a lot. You can put a sterile gauze on the bleeding area and put an equal pressure with it. Make sure not to irritate the gums too much. don't spit much and avoid taking food from extraction side. Take soft and liquid diet only. You should have kept the cotton swab there for about 1hr after the extraction. anyways don't worry. it will stop.
