curly - There are two types--Diabetes type 1 (hyperglycemia, the usual kind) and type 2 (hyperglycemia). They are completely opposite--I have no idea what type 2 is like, except, possibly, dizziness, fainting from lack of blood sugar. And. Lots of things can cause this--low p blood pressure, high altitude, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, etc. I'll concentrate on Type 1, the most common:
Also very slow healing. I knew a guy who had None of the above, but just a bit of a candy bar gave him a headache. He was diagnosed as borderline--that little bit of sugar pushed him over the edge.
Another risk factor is a family history of it and being Black.
My grandma was very short; so she got overweight very easily. She was very active her whole life, never really out of shape, and had 9 children, yet she got it.
Then there was Toad..ate 3 big Macs a night, slept in until 10 every day; never so much as walked or any other type of exercise. No family history. He was 5'4' and fat; he got it. But, he brought it on Himself..
Nana Lamb - There are not really any "first signs" of diabetes! The list of signs most post here and on other question and answer forums are those that come on gradually and only become noticeable when the person has had very high glucose numbers for several years.
Your best bet is to look at your family tree and see if any of the dwellers there have ever been diagnosed with diabetes. But do realize that prior to about 25 years ago, no doctors tested for diabetes other than in small "failure to thrive" children!! Adults were diagnosed with many things associated with diabetes now, such as heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, blindness, etc.
Diabetes symptoms sneak up on people and mostly they are shocked when they are told they have diabetes as they do not recognize any of the signs or symptoms.
If you think your family tree shows any signs of having had diabetics in it, do be making annual complete physical exam with blood draws appointments with your family doctor.
Ivan R - fat
ReplyDeleteDentist H since 2001 - look up "hypoglycemia"
ReplyDeletebut common symptoms are

you do NOT have to be fat to be diabetic.
a doctor can order a simple glucose test for detection of diabetes. This usually only requires fasting the day before the blood test.
