Scared...getting A Glucose Test Done?

396545384 I'm 14 and type 2 diabetes runs in my family, and i'm getting a 4 hour one tomorrow morning at 7:10 AM. I'm scared of that shaky feeling, and will I pass out?!? That is my ALL TIME biggest fear, i've passed out before. It was awful. They are making me fast, and i get to drink water through-out the test, and ill have my mom, BFF, and my computer there. What will I feel like? They said I will have to drink a really sweet orange soda. That doesnt sound that bad. I looveee sugar so yeah hahaha. So what will happen and WILL I PASS OUT?? :'( I'm sooooo scared!

  1. Mike Z - I'd say that the disease of diabetes is a lot more scary than the test for it. You are fearing the wrong thing.

Because if you get diabetes at such a young age, then you will have all kinds of medical problems and complications for the rest of your life.

I suggest that you avoid eating fat and sugar together. Because some recent research has found that fat in the diet interferes with insulin production. And if you combine sugar with fat, then this is really bad in terms of you blood sugar level shooting up.

  2. Dr Frank - The modified GTT glucose tolerance test, only takes 2 hours not 4. I see no reason why you should even feel faint, let alone pass out due to the test, I suspect anxiety is your main worry.

  3. Jared - I have to concur with Frank here. Your test will not likely cause ANY symptoms. If you can manage to believe this,.. then your anxiety levels will be much lower and you will feel about as you do now. Your biggest worry then is how to pass the couple of hours. Really, you won't faint.. not as a result of the testing.

Anxiety can cause syncope and a million other symptoms. Which is why if you can convince yourself it is going to be ok -- (because it is).. then your anxiety will be much lower.

It will go much easier than you anticipate.. you will probably be more bored than anything unless your BFF and mother are good entertainers. :)

    Take care,

  4. Nana Lamb - passing out is the least of your worries!! I personally think the fasting glucose tolerance test should be banned from all persons!!

The HbA1c blood draw tells what your average glucose for the last 90 days has been! This is the current Gold Standard for testing for diagnosis among the Endocrinologists at Teaching Hospitals. Some doctors are still in the 20th century in their education and haven't kept up with advancements in diagnosis, treatment or even want to.

I don't like syrupy drinks in the first place. I wasn't raised with syrup drinks or foods! So I don't want them as they will make me sick to my stomach.

When your glucose spikes with drinking the syrup, you won't get dizzy and pass out unless your glucose is already really high! The dizzy and passing out come with LOW or HYPO glycemia or blood sugar, NOT with higher or rising glucose levels.

So quit worrying as that too can raise your glucose levels. Breathe deeply about 4 or 5 times and go in smiling and ready to relax and face this. I do the deep breathing to help my blood pressure from not being so high when I go in there. I really hate having to go to doctor's offices for any reason!!
