Is It Safe For Diabetics To Eat Raw Honey?

396545384 I am Pre-diabetic and I have read alot about the health benefits of raw honey. It has 16 grams of sugar in one tablespoon. I realize it could be just natural occurring sugar, but I'm not quite sure.

  1. Tabea - Diabetics can eat anything they want as long as their blood sugar remains within target, two hours after eating.

The problem in diabetes is not just sugar but all carbohydrates. All carbohydrates turn to sugar in the blood, and raise blood sugar.

Honey is very high in carbs (sugar). And hence has to be consumed in moderation.

  2. Frank - It isn't a great idea. The health benefits are completely overstated, mostly based on the fact that it is "natural" (as if beet juice and cane juice come from aliens).

Honey is almost pure sugar and water (about 98%). Sugar alone is a bad idea for someone with diabetes.

The bee poop that maks up the rest of the honey isn't going to stop you from getting diabetes.
