I had a lower wisdom tooth removed about 6 days ago and today some of my stitches dissolved/ broke slightly. I can now see the large hole where my tooth was - there was white stuff in there and after a vigorous salt wash it's now gone (Ok I did dab at it with some damp paper roll, maybe shouldn't have done that). I've since learnt that my not have been food but a scab and I shouldn't have washed it off :/ the hole is deep but I can just make out the dark area where I presume the blood clot still is - will I be ok? I can't speak to my dentist for a day or two but I'm really paranoid now.
Kernow Lady - Not the best thing to do but dry socket is very rare and can be cured easily. Just leave it alone and it will most probably heal by itself ok. There is nothing a Dentist can do unless you start to get a lot of pain.
ReplyDeletesincity usa - If you have catgut stitches then they should dissolve on there own. Most doctors who want to see you again would use nylon stitches and would see you again in 5-7 days to see how you are healing up. But if you have a dry socket you would be in a fair amount of pain, so unless that's the case your fine. Just let it heal on it's own. Why the dentist didn't give you proper instructions at the office is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteSandy - Six days ago, you should be just fine by now. The danger of a dry socket has pretty much passed, there should be a good amount of healing that has already taken place. Sutures are usually removed in 7-10 days anyway.
ReplyDeleteYou will have a "hole" there for a while, as the bone will take a bit to fill in.
Don't be paranoid about it! I'm pretty sure you'll be just fine. Below is a good link that a Nebraska DDS has put up for his patients concerning dry sockets. Check it out - good info -
***RELAX**** You're ok! : )
Dumdedum - It's probably fine, if anything was wrong you would have a really foul taste and a huge amount of pain.
ReplyDeleteIt is simply now healing from the inside out.
Keep it clean still with the mouthwashes of salt and cooled boiled water and leave it alone, stop looking at it and do not poke it!
charliesangel - Hi a dry socket usually happens within the first 4 days of having a tooth removed. You will know if you have one as you will be in a lot of pain. If you can see the blood clot then that is a good thing because if this is dislodged it causes the dry socket. Keep up the salty mouth rinses but other than that leave the socket alone, it will heal naturally. If you do however start getting serious pain then contact your dentist and he can dress it or contact your doctor and he can give you antibiotics. But after 6 days it should be starting to heal.
