  2. buffalo - Surgical Spirit BP

Each 1000ml of Surgical Spirit Contains:

    Methyl Salicylate

    5ml

    Diethyl Phthalate

    20ml

    Castor Oil

    25ml

    Industrial Methylated Spirit(Alcohol Denatured)

    q.s 1000 ml

Use & Benefits of each ingredients:

Methyl Salicylate : It is readily absorbed through the skin. It acts as local anesthetic, resulting in painless destruction of the epithelium during injection or treatment of the skin ie., less pain while administering injection.

Diethyl Phthalate : It is a solvent and plasticiser. It helps in uniform spreading of surgical spirit and dissolving surface organic materials. Thus it softens and smoothens the skin surface and injection becomes ‘less painful’.

Castor Oil : It is an emollient. It has softening and smoothening effect on the skin surface. It enhances the antimicrobial effect of alcohol by spreading uniformly and retaining it for reasonable time. Castor Oil avoids drying of skin surface due to alcohol.

Industrial Methylated Spirit : It is one of the fastest & safest antimicrobial agents. It sterilizes the area and evaporates fast.

If alcohol or Alcohol Denatured is used, instead of Surgical Spirit, it will be devoid of the above benefits. Hence recommended to use surgical spirit BP.

Denatured alcohol or methylated spirits is ethanol that has additives to make it more poisonous or unpalatable, and thus, undrinkable. In some cases it is also dyed.

Despite its poisonous nature, denatured alcohol is sometimes consumed as a surrogate alcohol, which can result in blindness or death if the denatured alcohol contains methanol. This happened during Prohibition, when the U.S. government used methanol in industrial alcohols manufactured in the United States.[11] To help prevent this, denatonium is often added to give the substance an extremely bitter flavor. Substances such as pyridine help to give the mixture an unpleasant odor, and emetic (vomiting) agents such as syrup of ipecac may also be included. In Poland and other European countries denatured alcohol contains only substances having bitter flavor (like acetylsalicylic acid) and odour, and does not contain methanol or any substance of severe toxicity.

    Not advised.

    Take care
