Sandy - Canker sores don't appear on what is called "attached gingiva" - the area of the gums that your teeth are growing out of. You'll find them on "loose" tissue - the inside of the cheek or the lip, for instance. And gingivitis is usually painless. That's why it's such a problem. People think that because it doesn't hurt, it can't really be a problem (but it is). If I had to pick 1 or the other, I'd say you were getting a canker sore (but where in your mouth exactly is it?) They hurt like hell!
