=] - Some symptoms include unusual thirst, losing weight without trying, frequent urination, blurred vision, fatigue, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. You should just look up diabetes symptoms and make an appointment with your doctor.
ReplyDeletejon c - Usually you will have severe weight loss. If it is severe enough, your breath will smell like nail polish remover and hyperventilation. Your urine will have a high amount of sugar in it, but I wouldn't suggest trying that out.
ReplyDeleteYou might be able to borrow a diabetics test strip apparatus and see your blood sugar level. I believe anything above 100 or so would be bad after fasting.

ReplyDeleteThe only sure way to tell if you are diabetic is to have a HBA1C test performed by your physician. Based on your symptoms I would monitor your blood sugar levels. also there are many other factors that can cause your symptoms other than diabetes.
Anne D - Ask someone who has diabetes if you can check your blood sugar with their meter.

ReplyDeleteJohn W - In medieval days, they had professional urine tasters to diagnose diabetes. Your sugar levels have to be fairly high for there to be glucose in the urine but that would be one low tech way to find out, to simply taste your urine to see if it's sweet.
ReplyDeleteAlong more palatable DiY methods, you can buy urine test strips at the pharmacy, or you can get a glucose meter and do a glucose tolerance test as described in Wikipedia. With a GTT, you fast for 12 hours, then you take a reading, you take 75 grams of glucose or sugar, wait two hours, take another reading and look up the result on the chart in Wikipedia. You can usually get the glucose meter for free from the pharmacy or from the manufacturer's website ( accu-check.ca is currently giving away the Nano meter with 150 test strips ).
The Doctor will probably just look at the H1A1C test from your last blood test to decide if you have diabetes. The H1A1C shows how much glucose the blood cells have been exposed to, blood cells live for 90 to 120 days and new ones are made all the time so the average age of the blood cells are 30 to 40 days therefore the H1A1C gives an average over the last 30 days. Note it's an average so your glucose level could be all over the map and it would still seem normal which is why the glucose tolerance test is used to detect gestational diabetes.
There's really nothing to be scared of with diabetes as it's usually easy to manage and chances are that you don't have it.
micksmixxx - Unfortunately, my friend, the ONLY person that can help you is a doctor as no-one else can legally prescribe the oral medication(s) and/or insulin injections that you need if you are diabetic.
