How Am I Able To Control My Heart Rate?

396545385 first, a little history... I have found that i am able to consciously raise my heart rate on command. i am an emt, and have verified this with a pulse oximeter. i am able to achieve an increased heart rate without any physical exertion or change in breathing pattern, any time i so desire. the highest heart rate i have taken myself to is 180 bpm. i am certain i could have gone higher, but fear dysrhythmia if i do so. when i showed this to a paramedic co-volunteer, he told me his theory was that i had a hyper-sensitive sympathetic tone: more specifically that i could control my sympathetic nervous system. i also figured out when i do this it makes my pupils bigger, and gives me this sudden jolt of energy. i find it very helpful as when i get tired it will wake me up. it feels like when you go over a a bump on a bridge in a car or that butter fly feeling you get in your stomach when your in flight. is there a name for this?

  1. JoJo - A pulse oximeter is not an accurate way to verify heart rate and the heart rate from a pulse oximeter should NEVER be used for medical documentation unless verified by ECG or palpation.

Any slight tremor or changing the direction of your finger toward light can affect the reason. You know the tricks and have someone who does know much about a pulse oximeter, you can easily fool them.

Now, I suggest you learn alittle more about the proper use of a pulse oximeter and how to check a pulse before talking crap. If your heart is actually this irregular, you need to see your primary physician.
