Why Does My Blood Glucose Level Drop Following A Meal And Then Goes Up Again After An Hour Or So?

396545384 We did an experiment in my physio lab where we drank sugar water and after every 30 minutes we took our blood glucose levels with a glucometer.

Following the drink, my blood glucose level dropped to about 4.5 mM from 5.35 mM 30 minutes following the drink and it went back up to 5.1 mM.

Does this mean I might have prediabetes? :S

  1. Benjamin - because of the Insulin surge, when there is an introduction of glucose the pancreas produces insulin to convert it into useable energy, When you consume sugar it doesn't go directly to the bloodstream as it has to be digested first so the when the insulin is produced it grabs up all the available glucose in the blood until it can be replenished from the action of digestion. That is why there is a drop after the meal and a return to homeostasis after normal digestion.

  2. micksmixxx - The explanation from Benjamin is sound, my friend.

You do NOT seem to have a problem with pre-diabetes as the highest blood glucose level you recorded was 5.35 mmol/l, which is an excellent result and way within the realms of a non-diabetic. (A non-diabetic's blood glucose level would not normally rise above 7.8 mmol/l [140 mg/dL] two hours after consumption of a meal or drink containing carbohydrates.
