Hi, on Tuesday I'm getting my wisdom teeth out. They told me I'll be put under laughing gas first and IV sedation afterwards. I've been under laughing gas before, so I'm just wondering what the IV will feel like. Well, I know that I'll be unconscious, but I mean how long will it take to work and how will I feel when I wake up? I'll be out for less than an hour, I'm just wondering how I'll feel upon waking up mostly.
Thanks!
"I Don't Think So" Kat - First you are nervous and they tell you they are giving you the anesthesia to put you to sleep. It starts to burn in the arm and you soon feel it burn up the arm, in your chest, in your neck and then it stops burning for a second just as you fall asleep. It feels like you blink your eyes and when you open them the surgery is over.
ReplyDeleteoh sorry, if it is IV sedation then it only takes 1-6 minutes for you to feel sedated. It will make you really, really sleepy and you will not remember anything after wards. IV sedation is different than IV anesthesia.
Milk - Usually IV sedation makes you feel groggy and a little confused when you first wake up. It can last for just a little bit or for a few hours depending on what they use, how much of it, and just how you personally react.
ReplyDeleteJann - Basically they inject you. You feel sleepy. You fall asleep. You wake up kinda groggy and end up sleeping it off for most of the day.
ReplyDeleteI've only had one bad experience w/ general anesthesia, but it was an unusual situation so I don't give it much weight.
You really have nothing to worry about.
Unless you don't wake up.
arnie g - Just a heads up,you may not want them to give you a drug called Versed
ReplyDeleteIn fact, many people who use Versed for "conscious sedation" during a procedure are awake for the entire procedure but remember nothing, often believing they were "out" the whole time.
Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is commonly administered in combination with anesthesia before and during surgery. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like colonoscopies dental procedures like extractions, conscience sedation so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort. However, that does not mean that those sensations will not be experienced.
Indiana Jones - the thing you need to understand is that you WON'T be unconscious.
ReplyDeleteIV sedation is also known as "CONSCIOUS sedation".
basically you will be drifting in and out of sleep.
you will not remember being awake at all though cuz they give you an amnesia drug.
it only takes seconds for the IV sedation to take effect.
they will most likely be calling your name to help you wake up. you'll feel tired but should be able to become more alert fairly quickly and within a few minutes of waking up you'll get up, walk out, and go home.
Pangolin - Contrary to what another person here said, you will be unconscious. It will not be sedation, but IV general anesthesia. If you have an anesthesiologist or CRNA giving your anesthesia, you'll be fine. If it's the dentist/oral surgeon, just be aware that they do not follow the same safety standards that anesthesiologists do. Young people are pretty hard to kill, though, so you'll probably be OK.
ReplyDeleteAnybody's guess how you'll feel when you wake up. It depends on what drugs you are given.
