Metformin Substitutions Please?

396545384 I was on Mirena, for 7 months. Upon taking it out, it was found to have caused high insulin, and my dr put me on Metformin, 500mg 2x a day.
Since beginning the metformin 3 weeks ago, I have noticed severe emotional side effects. I have rapid mood swings, for often no reason, even though I am usually even-tempered. My sex drive has dropped from every other day or so, to once a week, if that. I've gained roughly 10 lbs, even though most people seem to lose weight on Metformin. If I'm to believe my house-mates, my attitude has changed, as well as my ethic (I don't clean anymore, quit caring about it)
So in the interest of not losing my temper and killing them, or vice versa, are there any suggestions for what I should ask my dr about? I have an apt Thursday afternoon.
Something with the side effect of appetite loss would be great.

Disclaimer before someone states it: No I do not have PCOS. Please don't suggest anything for fertility assistance. My only problem is the high insulin fallout from Mirena.

  1. Kai - Just tell your doctor all of the stuff you just wrote about. Unless you have liver disease or liver tumor prior to or since using Mirena, all the "symptoms" you list have nothing to do with Metformin. And your doctor should be familiar with your physical condition and be able to figure out whether you should stay on Metformin or try some other diabetes med--which may give you even more side effects.

  2. buffalo - Metformin does not cause what you describe. But Mirena can cause depression. Which seem to fit your problems.

    Take care

  3. CrazyLadyK - I actually do have PCOS, insulin resistance AND a Mirena. I used chromium picolinate as a substitute for metformin for a while. I would talk to your doctor, but from what I researched it helps with blood sugar so much so that you can not take the two at the same time.

Also, I have never heard about Mirena increasing insulin levels. I have to check that out. Thanks!
