Okay, I have really bad stopped up nose issues. My family has told me to use a Neti Pot. Is it healthy? The water is supposed to go through one side of your nose to another, which it does. Would it damage your nose? I always end up getting it in my mouth. Is that okay? How does it happen? I have so many questions!!!!!!

Mango Symphony - You should be fine. Doctors actually recommend this to suffering patients. Water will not damage your nose (unless it is too hot or cold). It should be warm, and no hotter than body temperature.
ReplyDeleteYour body is about 50-60 percent water. Running it through your nose will not damage it.
A Neti Pot actually sends water into your sinus cavities, and this is how it cleans out your nose. Both of the cavities are connected below your eyes. The water rushes up one nostril and floods the cavities. It loosens up mucus and forces it out the other nostril.
When you use the neti pot, it is often helpful to gently blow through the nose to help force the water and mucus out.
Sometimes people add salt to their water. The salt actually helps speed up the process of dislodging mucus from your nasal cavities. This is because there are small hair like structures in your nose called cilia. They help push mucus either out your nose or into your throat. The salt helps the cilia coordinate their action and work faster.
Too much salt will irritate your nose. A safe ratio is one pint of warm water to a half teaspoon of salt.
Water escaping into your throat is not dangerous. Although unpleasant, it is no reason to become alarmed. The nasal cavities open up into the throat. Some people actually use the water to push the nasal fluids into their mouth, and then spit it out.
The best way to prevent this is to make sure that your head is tilted at a 45 degree angle, and slightly forward.
Make sure to thoroughly clean the neti pot after you are finished.
Hope this helps!
