I'm getting a physical for work next week. They are testing our urine for proteins, bilirubin, glucose, ketones.. etc. basically just making sure were healthy. I am on a low/no carb diet. I know this will cause me to test posetive for keytones. im just wondering, how long does it take for me not to eat carbs & alot of protein before i begin to produce keytones? a day? 2? maybe 2 weeks? i m just curious.

micksmixxx - Unfortunately, my friend, with the amount of information that you've offered there's no way to be able to tell you. For instance, how much do you weigh? How active are you? Are you exercising? What type of exercise? How long are you exercising for? How intense are your exercise periods? How low is your low carb/no carb diet? How long have you been on this diet?
ReplyDeleteYou could enter ketosis in as few as a few hours, but it could equally be days, or weeks even.
TheOrange Evil - Usually within a few days to a week as you burn through the last of your glucose stores.
ReplyDeleteMost people produce zero detectable ketones because they're eating plenty of carbohydrates, so that's the reference range for the urinalysis. Be prepared for the doctor to freak out, even if he can see that your blood sugar is normal and you aren't passing glucose in your urine. I am also on a low-carbohydrate diet and I'm diabetic, so my doctors tend to run ketone checks on my urine without letting me know first, and then walk into the room solemnly, "You have ketones in your urine." They wait for a reaction and then ask me if I know what they are, to which I always respond, "Yes, I am on a low-carbohydrate diet. My blood sugar is normal. I am not in diabetic ketoacidosis." Just get ready to explain all this.
They might also claim you're starving or dehydrated and that's why you have ketones. Emphasize that you're neither and that you are in ketosis due to your diet.
