I've been trying to lose a few pounds but immediately screwed up this morning by eating bowls of cereal, popcorn chicken and cheddar pretzels (I have a binging problem). I'm trying not to eat the rest of the day now. How can I distract myself from eating/binging?
Rachel - Eat 3 good solid healthy meals a day. And eat them on a smaller plate (this apparently psychologically makes you less hungry) and think about each mouth you eat, and savour your food (this is so you recognise when your full)
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to snacking try to distract yourself, or just don't buy in any unhealthy foods. When I want to snack on something, which i really isnt good for me, I move away from the kitchen and just do another task (like work) or some exercise or something. I have pets so I can easily distract myself when playing with them, or just go out for a walk :)
♪ BlahBlahBlah ♪ - What I do (which I find really helpful) is I address the feelings. I learnt the difference between physical and emotional hunger and reviewed the situation depending on what I felt it was. If it was emotional hunger, I'd walk away from the kitchen and find something to do. If it's physical hunger, I would eat something.
ReplyDeleteAddy R - Get out of the house! Avoid anyplace with food! Keep yourself insanely busy! The good thing about eating a gigantic breakfast is that it speeds up your metabolism so if you do succeed in not eating the rest of the day then you probably won't gain weight. I'd do some double checking before you eat big breakfasts from now on though, I don't completely trust my knowledge ;)
ReplyDeletebaby dudette - Reasons why people do not lose weight due to starving themselves;
ReplyDelete*they feel deprived and hungry so they will binge and overeat.
*You starve your body and so it will use up muscle for fuel (not fat).
*Because of this your body goes into starvation mode in which it clings on to your fat as it is worried it will starve to death.-resulting in rapid weight gain when you eat again (because the body will think you will starve it again.)
WHICH EQUALS NO WEIGHT LOSS OR RAPID WEIGHT GAIN AFTER STARVING.
Your messing with your metabolism. Eat 4 small meals a day which will rpevent you feeling hungry and will give you some control over your eating. once you've learnt to treat your body appropriately by learning food is the fuel to weight loss then try exercising.
Ellie - The way to do it is... have a healthy breakfast then get a piece of gum and try to stay busy til lunch after a (healthy) lunch more gum and more being busy! same thing after dinner but chew your gum and relax a couple hours then have a granola bar are something and stay away from food the rest of the evening!
ReplyDeleteHanyoung - This was my answer for another question who had binging issues and she said it helped so I'll just reuse it because as long as it helps you thats all that matters :D
ReplyDeleteDefinitely for a binger, you should not take out the sugar and carbs out of your diet because you will be susceptible to binge on them again, which will lead to purging. Instead of cutting out, replace slowly some of the sweets for more nutrition dense food, fats and carbs are still nutritious and are good for the body and can help prevent binges. Binges are usually cause because the body is deprived of nutrition, so replace maybe one of two brownies for some butter for your bread, the next week the oreo for some nuts or peanut butter, or .healthy dressing for your salad, etc. Also eat extremely slowly and savor your flavors, you will eat less and also be less likely to purge.
- Start off slow. Usually for a binger, based on a little of my experience long ago and some friends, is that it's all or nothing, you either want to eat everything, or eat nothing. Here's what you do. I don't know if you are underweight, overweight, or obese, so i don't know how many calories you should be eating, but schedule out your meals, and DON'T DEPRIVE yourself, more calories in breakfast, morning snack, and lunch, afternoon snack, light dinner, and light snack if you need. Usually if you
- Usually support is needed. If you won't get professional help, your parents should at least help you. Like monitoring your eating, praising you for not binging and purging, and helping you. I don't really know how I can help with that. They should really be helping you and you should really talk to them about that.
- Usually, going out after my meal helps to prevent from continuing to eat. I go shopping for clothes, or shoes, or go to the library to study or read. If you drive, I guess that would be difficult because then you may go out and buy things but go out with your friends. I know some bulimics tend to lose and hide from people but do you have a friend that is really close and your really comfortable with? If you get a hobby like drawing or maybe getting a job. All these distractions are what can help you break your cycle.
- Starting to run also helps. If you have a treadmill at home if you don't want to go in public at the gym or turn your music really loud and start dancing without a mirror. You will get pumped and feel good about yourself and it will motivate you to not binge but eat better to lose weight.
- Drink lots of water, it helps curb your appetite and fills you up. Also essential for a healthy body.
I think I am writing too much and these are only suggestions that worked for me and may not work for everyone but I hope you do get better and overcome your b/p cycle because it will only harm you physically and emotionally Hope you win your battle.Good Luck.
Remember if you are craving a type of food eat that and replace it with something else just make sure to not replace all the nutritious foods and always remember there's another meal coming up so you don't have to eat that food at that moment :)
