Can A Dentist File Away Teeth Without Informing The Patient?

396545381 I just got invisalign, and apparently the dentist filed away some space in between my teeth, known as interproximal reduction. Before this happened, I was not informed that he would be performing an interproximal reduction and did not find out until later when we called him up and asked him about this. Is it illegal to not tell the patient that you are going to do a procedure?
-Invisalign gave instructions with the trays to do the procedure, but I was not aware of it
-I know what the purpose of interproximal reduction is, and I know that it's helpful in certain scenarios, I'm just concerned that a procedure that permanently alters my teeth was done without knowing about it

  1. Hawkeyesrule - Are you sure it wasn't part of the treatment plan that you had already signed off on?

  2. xxx4rM3nxxx - Probably slipped his mind, but I had my teeth filed when I got Invisalign, if you are worried about the teeth growing not growing back, it does and it's for the better. Every Invisalign patient has to get some parts of the teeth filed because there is no room for the teeth to maneuver in order to straighten out.

  3. Patricia - That is just part of the treatment plan. You could not have had the filing done without knowing what was going on. It is like having a nailfile dragged between your teeth. It only takes off a fraction of a hair and is not uncommon in many dental procedures. He/she may also need to grind off the top of some of your teeth at the end of your treatment to get the right fit. Trust your orthodontist.

  4. Sara - It's part of the treatment you signed up to do so I'm pretty sure it's not as my dentist had done that to me.
