What Happens When You Quit Bodybuilding?

396545382 I'm trying to gain weight and i'm going to start going to a gym soon. I'll be going to that gym continuously for 6 months. But I've heard that when you stop bodybuilding, your muscles turn into fat soon. Is this true? What if I continue exercising at home with some push-ups and sit-ups and that kind of basic exercises?

  1. just thinking - muscles don't (and can't) turn into fat,but they will start to atrophy and get smaller.

  2. fratley - In practicing any sport your fitness will decrease after 3 days to 2 weeks without practice. it's not detrimental, but it would be lame to start working out and suddenly stop anyway. so the thing you said about continuing at home is a good idea, but don't be too self conscious about what's fat and what's not. just keep practicing a sport and you should be good.

  3. naughtydogg70 - Muscle and fat are two different types of tissue. It's impossible for one type of tissue to turn into another. Does hair turn into liver tissue? So muscle does not turn into fat, but you will lose muscle mass if you stop weight training.

  4. Tommy Tucker - It is true that ex-bodybuilders become fat because they're used to eating excess calories to "bulk up".
And since they stopped weightlifting, the calories won't fuel their muscles but instead be converted into fat. It's as simple as that.

If you aren't using weights anymore but now using bodyweight exercises, then make sure that you're still fatiguing your muscles... it will FORCE the calories you eat to rebuild your muscles.

If you notice that you're body fat is rising, that just means you should eat less, because whatever calories isn't being used by the muscle will surely be converted to fat.
