Can You Develop A Peanut Allergy?

396545383 I don't normally care for the flavour of peanuts, but today I had this really strange craving for peanut butter so I went to Superstore and picked up a small jar of all natural, just peanut crunchy peanut butter. I made a piece of toast and smeared about 3 tbsp of the peanut butter onto it, and started eating it. I noticed my mouth felt kind of... prickly? but I thought that the peanut chunks must be scratching it so I finished off the piece of toast. But shortly after finishing it (about ten minutes) I felt really sick to my stomach and I ended up having diarrhea, and I have small red blotches all over my chest and face. So my question is can you develop an allergy to something you used to ear as a small child once you are in your twenties? Or am I just crazy? Or maybe something else set off the rash?

Thanks for your help and suggestion.

Cheers
This peanut butter only has two ingredients - peanuts and peanut oil

  1. peanut 2 - You can develop allergies, but it may be another ingredient.

Try a different brand of peanut butter, if you get the same reaction then its likely the peanuts.

  3. Techwing - Yes, most allergies are acquired at some point in life, so you can develop an allergy to peanuts even if you've never had a reaction before.

You can verify that it was the peanuts by being tested by a doctor.

Peanut oil does not cause allergic reactions; only the peanuts themselves do that. Of course, peanut oil may contain fragments of peanuts.

It's unlikely that you are at any risk of anaphylaxis, but you might want to ask your doctor about your reaction and get tested. If it turns out that you are now allergic to peanuts, just avoid them in the future. Contrary to the sensationalized stories you see in the media, you are unlikely to suddenly drop dead just because someone in the room is eating peanuts, or anything absurd like that.

  4. sunny_blossoms - It is possible to develop new allergies at any age. If you even suspect one you should get to a doctor as soon as possible. Allergies are not something to play around with. "Get emergency treatment for any severe food reaction" (see source).
