Cholesterol Test Results?

396545385 I got a cholesterol test today and my LDL and HDL seemed to have been added together along with triglyceride levels to get my total cholesterol levels.
I thought that the LDL level was the important result but the chemist said its the TC or total cholesterol thats measured which is important.
My questions if this is true and they say that the higher your HDL is the better then how could that be as when they measure your TC they say the higher the total is the worse it is. The total being the LDL +HDL+triglyceride levels

  1. Sara - It is a bit deceiving but total cholesterol is not exactly equal to LDL+HDL+triglycerides. It is a more complicated formula.

It is true that the more HDLs the better, but few people ever have an unhealthy amount, so the TC is more likely to measure the LDL+Triglycerides which are bad.

  2. thom t - Before you let your doctor prescribe drugs, read:
The fine print in a Pfizer ad for Lipitor states that it "...has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks."
Google a report by Sally Fallow and Mary G. Enig, PhD for the Weston A. Price Foundation, called
"Dangers of Statin Drugs: What you Haven't Been Told About Popular Cholesterol-Lowering Medicines".
I once started taking Lipitor and got some nasty side effects. I won't touch the stuff now!

Anyone taking statins should at least:
    1.Take the lowest dose possible
    2. Take the enzyme CoQ10 which statins deplete from your system.
