What Should I Do When My Gums Are Swollen And Cover My Braces?

396545381 I've had braces for about 2 months and went to the dentist and got them tightened a week ago. Then I noticed when eating that my very last tooth in the back was experiencing some pain it was small and ignored it. Today it begun to swell and cover the bracket on the braces and I'm starting to worry that something bad might happen.

  1. PatH - i had this problem too and i used a tooth pick and went between the two teeth that were affected by the swelling. i found a small piece of food was inbetween my teeth >.> when i removed it, the swelling immediately subsided and it was such a relief!

  2. M V - Go to the orthodontist ASAP!!! You don't want it to get even worse and super infected or anything. Tell your parents and let them know everything like how long its been hurting when you noticed it was starting to cover your braces and that you think you should go to the orthodontist. The faster it can be treated the better you are.

  3. Dave - Swollen gums are a common problem when braces are tightened. Try putting some ice cubes into a cup and then pouring one of the cubes into your mouth and gently pressing it against the inflamed gums. Spit the ice back into the cup when it gets too cold. Repeat. Don't overdue it. The inflamation will eventually go away. If things don't improve or get worse, see your orthodontist.
