Also how long does it take to help lower blood sugar? When it starts to work will I be able to be a wee bit relaxed on carbs? I know thats not the purpose but right now I still kind of miss them! I've been doing really really good with carb control to the point that my fastings have been around 96 to 98 and my highest during the day has been 122. I've still not lost even one single pound with my change of eating..I know not everyone will lose weight with Metformin but sure am hoping it helps!
I Guess I should add that I am either a prediabetic or I have Metabolic syndrome because I have high cholesterol/triglycerides/hdl/ldl STUFF going on too...not sure that makes a difference in taking the Met.
TheOrange Evil - Metformin builds in your system over time, so you won't see any immediate changes after taking your first pill. Over a few weeks, you should see a decline in your blood sugar, though. I don't really see drops after taking one, but I'd see a steady increase in BG if I skipped a couple pills.
ReplyDeleteUsually, doctors recommend that you take Metformin with meals to reduce the gastrointestinal distress associated with this medication. That being said, I know some diabetics who take Metformin (regular, not XR) at bedtime instead of at dinnertime because they insist that helps their fasting blood sugar levels. I take Metformin with my dinner, but there's no rule that you have to do this, too. It's something to discuss with your doctor. With permission, you may experiment with dinnertime Metformin and then bedtime Metformin to see which produces the best results.
I can't promise that the Metformin will ease the carbohydrate intolerance. It's not a sulfonylurea diabetic medication that stimulates your pancreas to produce more insulin. Metformin will reduce how much glucose your liver produces (diabetics tend to produce a lot more!) and it'll make you more sensitive to the insulin you naturally make. Because of how Metformin functions, this medication works best along with a low-carbohydrate diet and regular exercise, which also improves your insulin sensitivity. You may be able to eat more carbohydrates, but pizza and cake aren't likely to be on the menu anytime soon. You'll still have to carb count and moderate your portions significantly, unfortunately. The good news is that Metformin does make blood sugar a lot easier to control, has very few common side effects, most of them not dangerous, and can help with weight loss in some people.
I wish you luck with the weight loss. I am Type 2 and hypothyroid and sometimes that weight loss can be a real uphill battle!

ReplyDeleteNana Lamb - metformin doesn't actually work to lower your glucose nor does it necessarily help with weight loss. It is a systemic drug that requires about 4 weeks to get fully into the system to do any good. It talks more to the liver than the pancreas.
ReplyDeleteMetformin any formula, MUST be taken with food or it causes gastric upsets.
doctors tell us to take blood pressure lowering meds at night so we don't get so dizzy during the day.
Start walking!! One HOUR every day as fast as you can for weight loss. At first this might just be a couple times around the block, but with time you build up milage. It is totally amazing what an hour of walking can accomplish!!!
Appetite control can be accomplished with a pat of BUTTER on your toast!! Fats do not cause high lipids or high blood pressure! But the lack of them sure does make you hungry all the time.
