Dan S - Would recommend folding up some sterile gauze and putting that in your mouth and then closing your mouth and trying to keep it shut for perhaps 20 minutes+, enough folded up so that there is a little pressure on the gum surface with your jaw closed. Then remove very carefully.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I assume you're on an antibiotic. Be sure to keep taking it. If you can't get it to stop oozing, you're going to have to go in.
Beverly Hall - No, you should be worried.
ReplyDeleteJR - It is normal to ooze a little blood for 24 hours after an extraction. Are you taking any blood thinners, such as Aspirin, NSAID's or Plavix? These can cause you to bleed more heavily and take longer to form a blood clot. When the blood mixes with the saliva it will appear to be a lot more blood than it really is. It will depend on how much you are bleeding. If you are soaking Thru a wet tea bag with blood or your mouth is filling up with blood, then yes I would see a dentist soon or go to the emergency room. If it's just a little bit of blood in your mouth, then I would expect that to be normal. Make sure that whatever you are using to keep pressure on the extraction site is wet, so it won't pull on the blood clot. The blood clot is what protects the extraction site, so don't do anything that would disturb the blood clot-like sucking thru a straw, spitting, rinsing vigorously, or smoking.
