Martha Zimmer - Low protein c is a genetic defect. That means you're born with it. Protein c is an anticoagulant - it keeps blood clots from forming in your veins. Doctors call the clots venous thromboembolism. If you have a defect in this, doctors can test for the deficiency and put the patient on long-term therapy with aspirin, heparin or warfarin. All three of those thin the blood so blood clots won't form as easily.
