Will Urinalysis For Uti Show Bladder Cancer? ?

396545116 I recently had a urine test to check for a uti. The doctor found no infection but did find a small amount of crystals. I was told I just needed to drink more water to flush out my kidneys, and I was referred to urologist for a cystosopy. I'm wondering if cancer cells would've shown up in same urine sample they found the crystals in. Anyone know?

  1. diehard311fan - You can't find cancer cells in a simple urinalysis. You would need a more specific test like a kidney biopsy. If all you had were crystals I wouldn't be worried.

  2. Denisedds - Although it is not a diagnostic test for bladder cancer malignant cells are often found on a UA. The best way to evaluate the bladder is with a cysto. A kidney biopsy would never be done to diagnose bladder cancer and not very often for kidney cancer for that matter.

  3. Tiny - A UTI type of test will show bacterial infections and a few other things but not cancer. You need to do a special test for bladder cancer such as the bladder-tumor-associated antigen test (BTATM). It is important to understand that you should not rely just on any one test - some tests can result in false positives or negatives. One must take all clinical factors into consideration to back up a diagnosis.”
