Teeth Alignment And Overbite Issue In Terms Of Teeth Not Touching?

I have an overbite and none of my teeth meet, with the exception of a few back teeth on the left side. So my bite isn’t very good and sometimes when those left teeth at the back meet they hurt. I’m worried that I might be damaging them while not being able to count on my other teeth. I don’t know what an orthodontist could possibly do to fix this alignment issue. Does anyone know what would be involved in fixing this bite problem?
