Sugar Up And Down... Normal, So To Speak?

396545384 I'm not on meds-pending diagnosis in 3 months, but fasting blood this am was 115, i ate brkfst-it went to 131......then i ate a snack and a few hrs later, lunch--i waited an hr and a half and took a rdg--it was 102??? no exercise so far today (I just put up some blinds-not too hard) is that normal to eat and have it go down that much? I thought food=glucose up? why would it go down below fasting level?

(just got this glucometer today and am trying to figure out what is going on with my blood glucose-little guidance from dr.) tx for any info!
ps-is it a good thing it went down after eating?
and 2 hrs later it is 82

  1. Tabea - It is normal for blood sugar to fluctuate throughout the day.

As long as you are 80-100 fasting, and under 140, 2 hours after eating, you are in target range.

  2. TheOrange Evil - Many diabetics experience their highest blood sugar of the day in the morning (known as Dawn Phenomenon), which is why any carbohydrates you eat for breakfast can drive your blood sugar up higher than they would otherwise go throughout the day. Diabetics often combat this problem by eating soon after waking and keeping the carbohydrates at a minimum.

Your blood sugar probably dropped after your snack simply because the hormones that raise blood sugar in the morning are no longer affecting you.

It's very positive that your blood sugar dropped after eating. In the morning and when diabetics don't eat for a long time, sometimes the liver produces extra glucose. Although it's counter-intuitive, food can actually drop blood sugar in a diabetic because of this. I've experienced this many times. Now you just have to work on getting the fasting and post-breakfast numbers closer to what you're seeing in the middle of the day. 115 and 131 mg/dL aren't dangerous, but they're elevated. You'll probably see some improvement if you avoid high-carbohydrate dinners/snacks late in the evening and if you reduce your carbs at breakfast. Your body seems pretty tolerant of carbohydrates in the late morning/afternoon.

Good luck! You're doing a great job so far.
