A Question About Cancer ):?

396545116 This may be a stupid question, but i think i may aswell ask just to be safe.
My little brother(five years old) has been abnormally tired lately, he sleeps at the same time as hes always slept but he never wakes up when he used to. Even if hes had a long nights rest, hes still very tired. he doesnt get up when we tell him to(he used to) and the people that work at his preschool are also saying that he is taking more naps than the other children.
He was supposed to wake up two hours ago.

Also, hes been having rashes on his stomach, back and arm. Could these be a sign of early childhood leukemia? And should i go get him checked by the doctor?

Thanks
He used to so active, he would never sit down, so this is weird.

  2. jacob - he many have a sleep disorder like narcolepsy which you will feel tired all the time and have to take naps. it has to do with not being active. if hes not happy, hes brain wont be stimulated properly. poeple with narcolepsy will take serveral naps during the day or even sleep longer then usual. causes for narcolepsy are usually unknown. but you should google causes for being overly tired all the time. and never hesitate to see a doctor. but i doubt he has cancer. oh and i use to sleep in until 3pm everyday for about 2 years and i would get hot flashes and heat flares on my body, and thats causes by sleeping to long and forcing yourself back to sleep after you have naturally woken up.

  3. MalMonroe - Yes, he needs a doctor. Where are your parents? These symptoms could have any number of causes.

  5. Paul - That may be a symptom, so can the rash. I would advise you to tell your parents what you're thinking and tell them to take them to the doctor and ask for a simple blood test(A CBC to be exact). That will tell them if it's leukemia or not, because they'll know by his counts. My sons biggest giveaway was a bruise on his stomach. It was not tender, just there. He also had a fever, and was really down. His gums also started to bleed. We went to the ER and they did a blood test off the bat, his counts were extremely abnormal. They decided to keep him overnight and do a Bone marrow aspiration in the morning. They told us they were pretty sure my son has cancer. He said he was "about 90% sure". A little later he had a bruise where they took out the blood. They put an IV and pushed fluids for the fever. in the morning they prepped him for the aspirate. After a long day of waiting we found out he had AML M5. We applied for St.Jude's before thinking about it being cancer and by the next day we were accepted and being transported over there. He got his port and started chemo. We're in the induction phase. I'll be praying for you guys hoping it's just a cold he's coming into or just a phase he's getting into, but hopefully not this dreadful disease. Good luck :)

  6. greeney - Yes, these are 2 symptoms of leukemia, the rash could be petechiae (tiny pinhead blood dots) but there are other symptoms as well involving leukemia..it could be any number of conditions.

Yes, this little one needs to be seen by a doctor...constant long sleeps is not normal for a child that age, my daughter was in grade 1 and started to fall asleep during lessons.
