  1. techman - sorry to hear it's so bad. It sounds like his heart is badly affected now. He probably knows too and does not want to worry you. Maybe you need to respect that!

  3. Felex Fff - He has to get the sugar level down and you have to help. If he is eating what he wants he is being selfish and is not caring about people who love him. I don't know how long this has been going on for but from the sounds it's not too late. 1st avoid complex carbohydrates (bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, cereal, raisins) and simple sugars (ice cream, any drink with sugar) and switch insulin (Levemir, Humalog 70/30, Humalog, Novolog, Apidra), the Dr. should have suggested this unless it's because of his diet. Exercise as well. I know you said he has wounds but if he can get out of bed he can do 15 minutes of basic exercises 5 days a week. Exercise will decrease the body's resistance to insulin (whether it's his own or injected). This is not impossible and if he does it and gets his sugar down he may feel better and this will further motivate him to continue, if he can walk, walk with him for 15 minutes and talk. If not stretching and leg lifts, small weights and just raising his arms will all help. The Dr. hopefully has him on a diuretic to get rid of the edema if not, find another.

  4. TheOrange Evil - He should be in the ER with blood sugar that high.

If he's eating a diet high in carbohydrates, that's going to drive up his blood sugar regardless of whether he's injecting insulin. Also, the infection isn't helping his blood sugar and his blood sugar isn't helping the infection. (Infections raise blood sugar and infections are more likely when blood sugar is high.)

Drive him to the hospital as soon as possible. He needs to get his blood sugar down fast and he can't do it on his own. They can also help treat his infection. When he gets home, he needs to change his diet and make an appointment with his doctor to help him figure out how much insulin he needs.
