Circulatory Route From Knee To Lungs?

396545385 A blood clot formed in the knee during knee surgery has the potential to travel to the lung causing a pulmonary embolism. What would be the circulatory route starting with the popliteal vein?

  1. Shergill - Popliteal vein -> femoral vein -> common femoral vein - > common iliac vein -> inferior vena cava -> right atrium -> tricuspid valve -> rt. ventricle -> pulmonary vein - > pulmonary embolus occurs in the capillary network of the lungs.

  2. sono gal - All of the answer that the RN gave you is correct- expect...blood goes from the right ventricle through the pulmonary ARTERY to the lungs. Pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood into the left atrium and deoxygenated blood flows through the pulmonary artery.
Arteries carry blood away from heart and veins towards (regardless of oxygen level- so the pulmonary vessels break the conception of oxygen vs non). Interesting tidbit. :)

  3. gangadharan nair - Popliteal vein drains the peroneal vein before reaching the knee joint and turns into the femoral vein. Femoral vein becomes external iliac vein. External iliac vein joins internal iliac vein to form common iliac vein. It unites with fellow of the opposite side to form inferior vena cava. Inferior vena cava drains deoxygenated blood into right atrium. It flows into right ventricle through tricuspid valve. When the right ventricle contracts, the blood is pumped in the pulmonary artery through pulmonary valve. Through pulmonary artery, blood reaches either side of the lungs.
