Need Help Understanding My 3 Hour Blood Glucose Readings?

396545384 I really could use some help understanding my three hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) readings. My readings were: fasting = 90, 30 min = 198, 1 hr = 234, 2 hr = 147, 3 hr = 45

About a year ago I went for a two hour OGTT and I was told that 2hr result of 155 or below was fine. Last week when I went for a 3hr test, at first I had only seen my 2hr results (147), so I thought everything was okay. But earlier today I was given the rest of my readings and am very confused. I know the 1 hour is high and the 3 hour is very low. So what do all these numbers really mean? With regards to the last testing results, I actually felt okay and by then it had been around 16hrs since I last ate. - Thanks for any help!

  1. TheOrange Evil - Normal blood values for a 100-gram oral glucose tolerance test used to screen for gestational diabetes:

    Fasting: less than 95 mg/dL
    1 hour: less than 180 mg/dL
    2 hour: less than 155 mg/dL
    3 hour: less than 140 mg/dL

Your one-hour result was far too high, your two-hour result was normal, but more borderline, and your third-hour reading was hypoglycemic. You probably had reactive hypoglycemia - that's when your pancreas releases a large amount of insulin to deal with high blood sugar.

The one-hour reading suggests there's a problem with your pancreas' insulin response. In a person with a healthy functioning pancreas, blood sugar stays in a very tight range even after consuming a lot of sugar. When the insulin response becomes impaired, the pancreas can't deal with rising blood sugar as well, so there can be very high blood sugar spikes. Your pancreas still works well enough to bring you down by three hours, whereas mine (I am diabetic) is so impaired that I wouldn't rebound for six hours or more. I'm not a doctor and I can't make a diagnosis, but I think you can tell that something's wrong. Not only did you spike too high, but your pancreas overreacted to the blood sugar spike too late and dropped your blood sugar 100 points in an hour. I think the good news is that you've caught this early, but the bad news is that you are having some blood sugar issues.

  2. syl c. - It means your blood glucose levels are unstable. This test relates to how your blood glucose reacts to sugar and it seems as if you are hypoglycemic (low blood sugar). Your levels dropped below the normal 70 mg/dl for hypoglycemia. You need to check with your physician and delve further into your numbers esp. the 45 after 3 hours. Diet is usually the culprit in hypoglycemia but not in all cases. Eating smaller meals, low carb, adding more protein, avoiding sugar can usually help persons with hypoglycemia.

Check with your doctor and get this issue addressed.

    Hope this helps.
