Do You Buy The Nonsense That Child Obesity Is Due To Poverty?

396545382 Some idiot lady on the news said it was cheaper to buy MacDonald's than to buy uncooked food. I mean, is this just a lazy person or fact? I can buy a pound of dried beans for less than a MacDonald's hamburger.

I can cook for 4 people for under $5 and have a balanced and delicious meal. Where do you stand on this poverty nonsense and cooking?

  2. Christine - I agree with you. Obesity is not caused by poverty. But, perhaps part of the blame is ignorance or lack of education. Toys in happy meals don't cause obesity either. I can't tell you how many happy meal toys I have thrown out and my children are far from fat. I also believe in a sin tax on junk food. If the crappy, nutritionally void, fat laden, sugar filled garbage called food is made more expensive than the nutritionally sound food, perhaps those who claim its cheaper to eat garbage will then have to say it is cheaper to eat healthy. Then what would their excuse be?

  3. jacovkss2 - I suggest you don't apply for a job at a company where they take surveys: your question vaguely hints at your own opinion on the matter. (In fact, this seems to be a speech that is thinly veiled as a question as to prevent it from being reported as a violation of the Y!A q&a format.)

But to answer your question: I do agree that it should easily be possible to buy proper food for the price of a meal at MacDonald's. However, in my student days (=> I didn't have much money) I did eat more crappy food because store-bought fast food is still a lot cheaper than good food.

  4. FastFingerEddie - It's more due to laziness than poverty.

I can eat 3 times a day and have 2 portions of fruit per day as a snack, 7 days a week, for ~£50.

People just don't want to, or don't know how to, cook a relatively time consuming and nutritious meal.

  5. Passion for Fitness aka Fitnessadventures2112 - Well , I do see your point . Sometimes it's not being lazy it's the lack of knowledge in nutrition . I've had some tough times and made nutritious meals as well . There is a lot you can do with macaroni , lean ground beef and veggies . Plus if you are a smart shopper you watch for deals at your local supermarket . I just purchased some lean pork ( butter fly ) for 3.00 which will make a healthy dinner for my family :)

  6. Layla - Ha I love this question! I don't think it has a thing to do with poverty. Exercise is also something to consider when debating obesity, and exercise can be done for free. Hence that laziness of the person if they are also arguing that a mac donalds is cheaper!

  7. onlymatch4u - NO. Simple answer. It is ridiculous to believe McMaggots sells food cheaper than you can fix at home. Just adding in all the medical costs to eating at McMaggots is enough to more than offset any argument it is cheaper. We need to be educating our children and parents as to how to prepare food. Buying at farmer's markets is a great way to keep the costs down and find good quality fresh food. What is hurting the poor is gas prices and health care costs (should be titled "health abuse costs").

A can of soda is expensive compared to the cost of water. The soda contains high fructose corn syrup that is creating fatty livers and OBESITY in a big way. Water is cheap, sodas are expensive.

I can eat a couple eggs, grits and homemade bread for under $5 and that is a great meal, filling, and far better than some Egg McMaggot cooked in vegetable oil that damages the heart, and a drink that is pasteurized garbage with no food value. It's a matter of education.

    good luck to you

  8. Elisia Samuels - True poverty would mean that people would be underweight

  9. Nicholas V - Child obesity has nothing to do with that, It has everything to do with lazy parents who don't care about their kids.
