  1. sunny Hill - Well if he is taking insulin that is most important.
Also has he tried chromium GTF supplements these are for type 2 but maybe they work.........

Actually I was watching TV a Boston study came out suggesting BCG or bacillus calmete gaurin I think it is called, originally used as a treatment option for prostate cancer and Tuberculosis I think.........Is now shown to reverse the effects of diabetes. I don't want to get your hopes up, and maybe you shouldn't tell your husband the way I explained it....but maybe you want to research it and discuss it with your doctor because some scientist call it a cure for diabetes but I can not be certain, also this is most likely something your doctor is not aware of as it is leading edge stuff but never-the-less do your research and talk with your doctor would be a good idea.

Also there are different kinds of insulin....Long acting and Short acting and others.
-short acting is for immediate use
-long acting is helpfull through out the day
    -usualyy doctors prescribe both
-also there is insulin inhalors (if they are unconscouse) like exubera

Also if he is having coma's that is really not good, he should really be exact in measuring the portion of glucose to insulin including medication and diet also always **check his blood** if there is too much sugar give him insulin if there is not enough give him foods with high glycemic index for a quick response......good luck ;)

  2. syl c. - HIs blood sugars are unstable due to his dietary habits. He could be having hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) complications. Is he taking his blood glucose levels with his glucometer? If not, he needs to in order to get an idea of where his blood glucose readings. He is skipping meals which is not good esp. for someone on insulin. You need to speak to his doctor and let him know of his situation and see what the doctor advises but he definitely needs to get this checked in order to get this treated before it turns into extreme complications.

You are doing the right thing in reaching out for help as he doesn't seem to want to help himself. This is really a great concern seek his doctor's help you may need to get his meds adjusted or changed but the important thing is to see his doctor, get him on a scheduled meals, test his blood sugars before and after meals and get him to move around even walking around the block would help.

I know you probably know most of these things since he has been a diabetic for so long but it is imperative that action be taken even if you have to take the first step, just as you did here.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Cammie - You both need a great endocrinologist and a dietitian.
