10 Year Old Needs Root Canal?

396545381 We are wondering how long root canals last. Our 10 year old is in need of a root canal and in pain pretty much every day. We have had 2 opinions and x rays done, so it's pretty clear. But we were wondering if pulling the tooth is another option (due to financial difficulties) and than later on after saving we could pay for an implant. How long do the teeth generally last after root canal? Or do they die and crumble after a certain time?

  1. Melissa Smith - I would not do a root canal. My friends mom has had like 3 and they have given her nothing but problems. The best thing to do with her age is just have it pulled. They have 3 different kind of implants you can get now. One is right after they pull it they will put like a fake one in it's place. But that has to be done before the area closes. The other is a bridge which they have to shave the tooth in front and behind the other and they make a bridge of teeth to put in it's place. The last is a retainer with a fake tooth on it. That is the cheapest one. Also a good idea cuz the retainer also acts as braces and keeps all the other teeth straight.

  2. Ipsa Koehler - Its always better to save the tooth than getting it pulled out. When the caries reach the pulp portion of tooth, then root canal treatment is required. You can get root canal treatment followed by crown for the tooth. If root canal treatment is done properly, then prognosis for root canal treated tooth is good. Implants can't be given at 10 years of age if tooth is pulled out and the left out space of missing tooth may cause problem. so its better to get rct done. If you don't have much money, then you can approach any of the dental schools near your place where treatment provided is cheap.
